Diana Vreeland (1903–89,) née Dalziel, was a French-American fashion columnist and editor. Her charismatic personality and distinctive personal preferences celebrated her successful leadership of major American fashion magazines during the mid-20th century.

Born in Paris, Vreeland moved to New York when she was eight. Her first column, ‘Why Don’t You …?,’ was for Harper’s Bazaar, and she became fashion editor there 1939–62. Her startling memos to staff became legendary. She was parodied as the flamboyant fashion editor who tells staff to ‘Think pink!’ in Funny Face (1957.)

Vreeland had an admirable visual sense and furthered the careers of many models, photographers, and designers. After being editor-in-chief of American Vogue (1962–71,) she became a special consultant to the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of New York.

Vreeland published a book on fashion, Allure (1980,) and her autobiography, D.V. (1984.) Amanda Mackenzie Stuart wrote Empress of Fashion: A Life of Diana Vreeland (2015.) The documentary Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel (2012) is an assessment of her achievements.
