Inspirational Quotes by Mary Harris Jones (Mother Jones) (American Labor Activist)

Mary G. Harris Jones (1837–1930,) known as Mother Jones from 1897 onwards, was an Irish-born American socialist, labor and community organizer, who was once known as “the most dangerous woman in America.” A schoolteacher and dressmaker, she became a prominent union organizer, community organizer, and activist.

Born in County Cork, Ireland, Jones migrated to America via Canada after the Irish Potato Famine. When living in Memphis in the 1860s, a yellow fever epidemic killed her four children and her husband. She also lost her home to the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Subsequently, she devoted herself to the cause of labor, traveled to areas of labor strife, especially in the coal industry.

Jones helped coordinate significant strikes and co-founded the Social Democratic Party 1898 and the Industrial Workers of the World 1905. At age 82, she was imprisoned in West Virginia on conspiracy to murder in 1912. She received a pardon and returned to labor agitation.

Jones wrote The Autobiography of Mother Jones (1925.)
