Inspirational Quotes by Arthur Erickson (Canadian Architect)

Arthur Charles Erickson (1924–2009) was a Canadian modernist architect, urban planner, and landscape architect. He is celebrated for his modernist concrete structures that feature contemporary design, rooted in the location’s natural inspiration.

Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Erickson served in the Canadian Army Intelligence Corps during World War II. He studied Asian languages at the University of British Columbia-Vancouver and architecture at McGill University-Montreal.

Erickson taught architecture at the University of British Columbia and formed a partnership with architect Geoffrey Massey for designing houses. Erickson first earned recognition with his plan for Simon Fraser University (1963–65) in Burnaby, British Columbia, which included a vast sky-lit indoor plaza in response to the surrounding cool and rainy ambiance.

Erickson is renowned for designing some of the most recognizable buildings and sites in Canada and America. His works include the Museum of Glass (Tacoma, Washington, USA,) The Canadian Chancellery (Washington D.C.,) Roy Thompson Hall (Toronto, Canada,) Robson Square (Vancouver, Canada,) and the Simon Fraser University campus (Burnaby, British Columbia.)
