Charles Osgood Wood III (1933–2024) was an American journalist, radio commentator, author, and the longtime host of CBS News Sunday Morning. Known for his warm baritone voice, poetic writing style, and trademark bow ties, he became one of the most recognizable and beloved figures in American broadcast journalism.
Born in New York City and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, Osgood studied economics at Fordham University, graduating in 1954. His broadcasting career began at Fordham’s radio station, WFUV, where he discovered his talent for writing and on-air delivery. After college, he served in the U.S. Army Band before returning to radio as an announcer and writer. In 1967, he joined CBS, where he developed The Osgood File, a long-running series of short radio essays that blended news, commentary, and poetry—an early showcase of the thoughtful storytelling that would define his career.
Across more than five decades, Osgood earned a reputation for gentle humor, curiosity, and a deep appreciation for everyday life. His books, including Nothing Could Be Finer Than a Crisis That Is Minor (1979) and Defending Baltimore Against Enemy Attack (2004,) highlighted his narrative charm and wry observational style. He also published collections such as See You on the Radio (1999) and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the White House (2008,) further cementing his place as a distinctive American voice.
