Inspirational Quotes by Otto Preminger (American Filmmaker)

Otto Preminger (1906–86,) fully Otto Ludwig Preminger, was an Austrian-born American film director and producer. He is noted for The Moon is Blue (1953,) The Man with the Golden Arm (1955,) and Bonjour Tristesse (1958,) and other films that have become known for their moral neutrality.

Born in Wischnitz, Bukovina, Austro-Hungarian Empire (present-day Vyzhnytsia, Ukraine,) Preminger studied law at Vienna University, then acted with director Max Reinhardt, joined the Theater in der Josefstadt (1928,) and became its director (1933.) His first film was Die große Liebe (1932.) He migrated to America in 1935, becoming naturalized in 1943.

Preminger directed several Broadway productions, including Libel! (1935) and Outward Bound (1938.) He then moved to Hollywood, first as an actor and then as a director under contract to Twentieth Century Fox, where he specialized in costume dramas and film noir thrillers like Laura (1944) and Where the Sidewalk Ends (1950.) An independent filmmaker from 1952, he boldly tackled controversial themes such as drug addiction in The Man with the Golden Arm (1955,) rape in Anatomy of a Murder (1959,) Jewish repatriation in Exodus (1960,) homosexuality in Advise and Consent (1962,) and racism in Hurry Sundown (1966.)

Preminger’s other celebrated films include Carmen Jones (1954,) Bonjour Tristesse (1959,) and Porgy and Bess (1959.) His later theatrical work consists of The Trial (1953) and Full Circle (1973.) He also acted in the film Stalag 17 (1953) and the television series Batman (1966.)

Preminger published an autobiography, Preminger (1977.) Willi Frischauer wrote Behind the Scenes of Otto Preminger: An Unauthorized Biography (1973.) Film historian Foster Hirsch wrote Otto Preminger: The Man Who Would Be King (2007.)
