Inspirational Quotes by Ernest King (American Fleet Admiral)

Fleet Admiral Ernest Joseph King (1878–1956) was a leading U.S. Navy strategist during World War II. Appointed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, he played a central role in coordinating American military operations worldwide.

Born in Lorain, Ohio, to British parents, King graduated fourth in his class from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1901. He served in the Spanish-American War and World War I, gaining valuable experience in naval operations. From 1916 to 1919, he served on the staff of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet. Qualified in submarines, he commanded the New London submarine base 1923–25, then trained in naval aviation in 1927.

In 1941, King was named Commander in Chief of the U.S. Fleet. In 1942, he became Chief of Naval Operations, holding both positions throughout the war. He directed Atlantic and Pacific operations, overseeing submarine warfare and anti-U-boat strategy. His leadership helped develop the numbered fleet system, improving command and organization.

Known for his direct, disciplined leadership style, King pushed for aggressive naval strategy and expanded U.S. sea power. He retired in 1945, leaving a lasting influence on naval command structures. His life is chronicled in Thomas B. Buell’s Master of Sea Power (1980,) David Kohnen’s King’s Navy (2024,) and Walter Muir Whitehill’s A Naval Record (1953.)

If a ship has been sunk, I can’t bring it up. If it is going to be sunk, I can’t stop it. I can use my time much better working on tomorrow’s problem than by fretting about yesterday’s. Besides, if I let those things get me, I wouldn’t last long.
