Inspirational Quotes by William M. Evarts (American Lawyer, Politician)

William M. Evarts (1818–1901,) fully William Maxwell Evarts, was an American lawyer and politician. He served as a U.S. Secretary of State 1877–81, U.S. Attorney General 1868–69, and U.S. Senator from New York 1885–91.

Born in Charlestown, Massachusetts, Evarts attended Yale College and Harvard Law School and was admitted to the bar in 1841. He was defense counsel for President Andrew Johnson in the impeachment proceedings of 1868. In 1863 and 1864, he served on two diplomatic missions to England to negotiate for an end to Confederate warships’ private construction.
