Inspirational Quotes by Edward William O’Rourke (American Catholic Priest)

Edward William O’Rourke (1917–99) was the sixth Roman Catholic Bishop of Peoria (1971–90.)

Born on a family farm near Downs, Illinois, O’Rourke graduated from St. Henry College. He studied at St. Mary of the Lake Seminary in Mundelein, Illinois, and was ordained in 1944. He then served as an assistant chaplain at the Newman Centre of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the executive director of the National Catholic Rural Life Conference 1960–71.

O’Rourke was appointed Bishop of Peoria in 1971 and served until retirement in 1990. In 1976, he was aboard TWA Flight 355 from New York City to Chicago when Croatian separatists hijacked it.

O’Rourke was an advocate of simple living. His works include Living Like A King: A Plea and a Plan for a Simple Life (1979,) Gift of Gifts (1977,) Self Help Works (1978,) and Roots of Human Rights (1981.)
