Inspirational Quotes by Liv Ullmann (Norwegian Actress)

Liv Ullmann (b.1939,) Fully Liv Johanne Ullmann, is a Norwegian actress and film director whose name is closely linked to Swedish director Ingmar Bergman with whom she worked in several films.

Born in Tokyo, Japan, Ullmann studied acting at the Webber Douglas School in London before beginning her career with a repertory company in Stavanger, Norway. She made her film début in Fjols til fjells (1957, Fools in the Mountains.) Still, her screen image was defined mainly through a long professional and personal association with Ingmar Bergman, in which she laid bare the inner turmoil of women experiencing various emotional and sexual crises.

Ullmann and Bergman’s films together include Persona (1966,) Viskningar och rop (1972, Cries and Whispers,) Ansikte mot ansikte (1975, Face to Face) and Höstsonaten (1978, Autumn Sonata.) Her work for other filmmakers has been less challenging, particularly in English language productions like Lost Horizon (1973.)

Ullmann made her Broadway début in A Doll’s House (1975,) and regular theatre appearances include Remember Mama (1979) and Old Times (1985, London.) Her films as director include Sofie (1992) and Enskilda Samlal (1996.)

A UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, she co-founded the Women’s Refugee Commission, part of the refugee aid organization International Rescue Committee. Her autobiographical works are Changing (1977) and Choices (1984.)
