Inspirational Quotes by Elizabeth Goudge (English Novelist)

Elizabeth Goudge (1900–84) was a British author of novels, short stories, and children’s books. She is well known for her striking depictions of small-English town life in books such as Green Dolphin Street (1944; film, 1947.)

Born in Wells, Somerset, Goudge studied at Reading University and taught art and design. She taught design and weaving, leatherwork, and embroidery 1922–32.

Goudge became a full-time writer in 1938. Her first major success was with the novel Green Dolphin Country (1944,) set in 19th-century New Zealand and the Channel Islands. The book was made into a film in 1947. Other important novels include Gentian Hill (1949) and The Child from the Sea (1970.)

Goudge’s The Little White Horse (1946,) a book for children, won a Carnegie medal. She also wrote several books with a Christian theme, including the biographies God So Loved the World: The Story of Jesus Christ (1951) and My God and My All: The Life of St. Francis of Assisi (1959.)

Goudge’s autobiography is The Joy of the Snow (1974.)
