Inspirational Quotes by Sugar Ray Robinson (American Boxer)

Sugar Ray Robinson (1921–89,) originally Walker Smith, was an American boxer. He was one of the greatest boxers in the history of the sport, and one of the first African American athletes who became celebrated outside the boxing arena.

Born in Detroit, Michigan, Robinson was as an amateur boxer winning Golden Gloves titles as a featherweight in 1939 and as a lightweight in 1940. He became a professional in 1940.

Robinson was the undefeated world welterweight champion 1946–51 and five times the middleweight champion (1951 (twice,) 1955, 1957, and 1958–60.) Renowned for his defense, Robinson had 109 knockouts and lost only 19 fights in the course of 202 professional bouts. He fought the last of his 21 world title bouts in 1961 and retired in 1965.

Robinson’s flamboyant personality made him a hero of boxing fans throughout the world. In retirement, he appeared on television and in motion pictures and formed a youth foundation in 1969.
