Inspirational Quotes by Alexander H. Rice (American Politician)

Alexander Hamilton Rice (1818–95) was an American politician and businessperson from Massachusetts. He served as Mayor of Boston 1856–57 and was a U.S. Congressman during the American Civil War. He was the 30th Governor of Massachusetts from 1876–78.

Born in Newton, Massachusetts, Rice was educated at Union College in Schenectady, New York. Rice ran a paper business for many years, Rice-Kendall Company, one of the principal paper distributors in Boston. He was president of Paper Company in Turners Falls, Massachusetts, and the American Sulphite Pulp Company in Boston.

Rice entered Boston politics in 1853. As Boston mayor for two one-year terms, he helped broker an arbitration that began developing its Back Bay area. His service in the U.S. Congress included introducing the failed Crittenden Compromise, oversight of naval affairs during the Civil War, and resistance to Radical Republican actions. As governor, he championed social reform legislation and reductions in working hours. After three one-year terms as governor, he retired from politics.
