Liberty Hyde Bailey (1858–1954) was an American horticulturist and botanist. His systematic study of cultivated plants transformed American horticulture from a craft to applied science.

Born in South Haven, Michigan, Bailey was a horticulture professor at Michigan State (1885) and Cornell (1888) universities, and he founded the Bailey Hortorium at Cornell University in 1935.

Bailey was considered the father of rural sociology and rural journalism. He also co-founded the 4-H youth movement (1902,) the American Society for Horticultural Science (1903,) the nature research movement, parcel post, and rural electrification.

Bailey had a direct influence on the development of genetics, plant pathology, and agriculture. His prolific literary output (700 scientific papers and 66 books) provided horticultural information to botanists, farmers, and gardeners. He edited various works such as the Standard Cyclopedia of Horticulture (1914–17) and Manual of Cultivated Plants (1923) and coined the term ‘cultivar.’
