Inspirational Quotes by Hildegard Knef (German Actress, Singer)

Hildegard Knef (1925–2002,) fully Hildegard Frieda Albertine Knef, also Hildegard Neff and Hildegarde Neff, was a German stage- and screen-actress, singer, and writer.

Born in Ulm, Germany, Knef began studying acting at age 14. She worked as a painter and cartoonist at the U.F.A. (Universum Film Company) studios during World War II while studying acting at the Babelsberg film school.

Knef started acting at 18. Her role as a returning survivor of a Nazi concentration camp in Wolfgang Staeudte’s Die Moerder sind unter uns (1946, ‘The Murderers Are Amongst Us’) brought her fame overnight in one of the first postwar German films.

A stage actress, Knef played leading roles in Shakespeare’s As You Like It, Eugene O’Neill’s O Wilderness!, Marcel Pagnol’s At the Golden Anchor, and Romain Rolland’s A Game of Life and Death. She left for Hollywood after her successful screen role in Rudolf Jugert’s Film ohne Titel (Film Without A Title, 1947.)

Knef returned to Germany after two years of unemployment in Hollywood and acted in Hollywood and German productions from 1950 onwards. She acted in Nachts auf den Strassen (Nights On The Streets, 1951,) Alraune (1952,) Diplomatic Courier (1952,) La Fete a Henriette (1952,) and The Man Between (1953.) She also had stage success on Broadway 1954–65, starring as Ninotchka in Cole Porter’s musical comedy, Silk Stockings.

In the 1960s, Knef developed a cabaret act, often writing her own lyrics. Her autobiographies are Der geschenkte Gaul (1970; The Gift Horse) and Das Urteil (1976; The Verdict.)
