Theodore Isaac “Ted” Rubin (1923–2019) was an American psychiatrist and author.

Born in Brooklyn, New York City, Rubin graduated from Brooklyn College, served in the U.S. Navy in New York, got a medical degree from Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1951. He did his residency at the Los Angeles V.A. Hospital before completing his specialty in psychiatry at Downstate Medical School in Brooklyn. Rubin spent most of his career in private practice in Manhattan.

A former president of the American Institute for Psychoanalysis, Rubin wrote more than 30 fiction, nonfiction, and self-help books, including The Creature: Three Remarkable Stories of Children Struggling to Find Themselves and Their Places in This World (1962.) His other notable books include Compassion and Self-Hate (1975) and Love Me, Love My Fool (1976.)

Rubin’s Lisa and David (1962) examined the inner lives of two young people with severe mental distress. This short novel was adapted into the Academy Award-nominated film David and Lisa (1962,) and the later 1998-television film adaptation produced by Oprah Winfrey.

Rubin also wrote a regular column in Ladies’ Home Journal and frequently appeared on television to discuss mental health and emotional issues.
