Inspirational Quotes by J. Richard Munro (American Broadcast Executive)

J. Richard Munro (b.1931) is a retired American broadcast executive. He helped build the Home Box Office (HBO) pay television network into a cable TV powerhouse. He later formed the media conglomerate Time Warner through the merger of Time Inc. and Warner Communications.

Born in Syracuse, New York, Munro joined the Marine Corps out of high school. Wounded during the Korean War, he returned home after the war to attend Colgate University, majoring in English and psychology. Upon graduation in 1957, he joined Time Inc., where he rose through the ranks from magazine circulation clerk to the publisher of Sports Illustrated.

In 1971, Munro became manager of the company’s video division, including a smattering of cable holdings and a nascent pay television service called Home Box Office (HBO.) Munro persuaded Time Inc. to relaunch HBO nationwide via satellite, helping build it into a cable TV powerhouse. In 1990, Munro turned down a buyout offer from Paramount Communications (then Gulf+Western.) He bought Warner Communications instead and arranged the creation of one of the world’s largest media and communications companies.
