Rosalía de Castro (1837–85,) fully María Rosalía Rita de Castro, also Rosalía Castro de Murguía, was a Galician romanticist writer and poet of both regional and universal importance. She is one of the few women and one of the few regional writers in Spain to have a standing in the literary canon of Spanish literature.
Born in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, de Castro began composing verses at age 12 and published her book of poetry, La flor (The Flower, 1857,) at age 20. Her Cantares gallegos (Galician Songs, 1863) formed a crucial turning point for the literary status of the Galician language. Her verse collections also include Follas novas (New Leaves, 1880) and En las orillas del Sar (On the Banks of the River Sar, 1884.)
De Castro is known for her expressions of the spirit of the Galician people and their sorrows and difficulties. Her prose includes La hija del mar (The Daughter of the Sea, 1859,) Flavio (1861,) El cadiceño: Descripción de un tipo (The Man from Cádiz: Description of a Type, 1863,) El caballero de las botas azules (The Gentleman of the Blue Boots, 1867,) and El primer loco (The First Madman, 1881.)
