Inspirational Quotes by Arthur Calwell (Australian Politician)

Arthur Augustus Calwell (1896–1973) was an Australian Labor politician. He perhaps had the most significant influence on postwar Australia of any politician, notwithstanding his electoral failures.

Born in Melbourne, Calwell entered federal politics in 1940. As minister for immigration 1945–49 under Prime Minister Ben Chifley, he administered the influx of one million refugees from Europe after World War II. Concurrently, in support of the Australian Labor Party’s “White Australia” policy, he tried to expel Asian refugees.

In 1960, Calwell became the leader of the Australian Labor opposition. He retired following a heavy defeat and having survived an assassination attempt in 1966. He remained in parliament until 1972, when he published his autobiography Be Just and Fear Not.
