Lee Mack (b.1968,) born Lee Gordon McKillop, is an English comedian, actor, writer, and presenter, best known for creating and starring in the long-running BBC sitcom Not Going Out (s.2006) and for his role as a team captain on the panel show Would I Lie to You? (s.2007.)
Born in Southport, Lancashire, Mack grew up in modest circumstances, living above a pub until his parents separated. He attended Stanley High School and later studied Drama at Brunel University, graduating with a BA. Before comedy, he worked in various jobs, including as a bingo caller, stable boy, and Pontins holiday camp entertainer. His first open-mic performance came in 1994, and within 18 months he was a full-time comedian. He gained early recognition by winning So You Think You’re Funny at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 1995, and was later nominated for the Perrier Award in 2000.
Mack’s television career began with The Sketch Show (2001–04,) which won a BAFTA. His breakthrough came with Not Going Out (s.2006,) a sitcom he co-writes and stars in, which has run for over 14 series and won a Rose d’Or Award. He became a household name as a team captain on Would I Lie to You? (s.2007,) praised for his quick wit and improvisational humor. Other notable projects include Lee Mack’s All Star Cast (2011,) Duck Quacks Don’t Echo (2014–17,) Semi-Detached (2020,) and hosting The 1% Club (s.2022.) He has also appeared in Doctor Who (2018) and Inside No. 9 (2023.)
His stand-up tours include Going Out (2010) and Hit the Road Mack (2013–14,) both released as DVDs. Mack published his autobiography Mack the Life (2012,) offering candid reflections on his career and personal life.
