Anne Tyler (b.1941) is an American novelist and short-story writer. Her 23 novels subtly chronicle the anxieties and secrets of middle-aged, mid-American family relationships.

Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Tyler is the daughter of Quakers. She grew up in Raleigh, North Carolina, and graduated from Duke University. Her novel-writing focuses on life in Baltimore or in small Southern towns, and she is concerned with the themes of loneliness, isolation, and human interaction. Tyler has had a prolific career since her début with If Morning Ever Comes (1964.)

Tyler’s well-known titles include Morgan’s Passing (1980,) Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant (1982,) The Accidental Tourist (1985, film, 1988,) Breathing Lessons (1988; Pulitzer,) Ladder of Years (1995,) A Patchwork Planet (1998,) The Amateur Marriage (2003,) The Beginner’s Goodbye (2012) and A Spool of Blue Thread (2015.)

Never interested in being in the spotlight, Tyler does not do book tours or author appearances. Before the publication of her 19th novel, she had not given a face-to-face interview for nearly 40 years.
