Inspirational Quotes by Lew Grade (British Theatrical Impresario)

Lew Grade, Baron Grade of Elstree (1906–98,) born Louis Winogradsky, was a Ukrainian-born British motion picture, television, and theatrical producer. A pioneer of British commercial television, he served as president of ATV (Associated Television) 1977–82.

Born near Tokmak, Ukraine, Russian Empire, Grade was the eldest of three brothers who dominated the British show business for over 40 years. He moved to Great Britain in 1912 with his parents and brothers Boris (later Bernard Delfont, Baron of Stepney) and Leslie.

Lew and Boris became dancers (semi-professional at first,) winning competitions during the ‘Charleston’ craze of the 1920s but gave up dancing to become theatrical agents, booking variety acts into theatres. Lew joined forces with his youngest brother Leslie and was joint managing director of their theatrical agency until 1955.

Grade also became an impresario, helping to establish such stars as Norman Wisdom and Morecambe and Wise. He launched the ITV company ATV (Associated Television) in 1956. He headed several extensive film entertainment and communications companies, producing films such as Desperate Characters (1971,) The Return of the Pink Panther (1975,) The Cassandra Crossing (1976,) and Sophie’s Choice (1982,) and the television film The Lady and the Highwayman (1989.)
