Gerald Carl Meyers (1928–2023) was an American industrialist, renowned for his leadership as the chair and CEO of American Motors Corporation (AMC) 1977–82. He played a pivotal role in igniting America’s fascination with sport utility vehicles and overseeing the development of some of the most eccentric cars of the 1970s.

Born in Buffalo, New York, Meyers earned a Bachelor of Science in engineering from the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now known as Carnegie Mellon University) in 1950 and a Master of Science in business in 1954. Meyers began his career at Ford Motor Company before serving in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. After his military service, he joined Chrysler Corporation, eventually rising to the position of Director of Manufacturing for the company’s overseas plants in 1961.

In 1962, Meyers took on the role of director of purchasing at AMC in Detroit. Throughout the years, he held several executive positions, culminating in his appointment as CEO 1977–82. During his tenure, Meyers skillfully navigated AMC through financial challenges and masterminded successful collaborations, such as the partnership with Renault and the eventual acquisition of the company by Chrysler Corporation.

Meyers also made significant contributions as an author and educator. He wrote insightful books on management and leadership and taught at Carnegie Mellon University’s Graduate School of Industrial Administration and the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan. His works include When It Hits the Fan: Managing the Nine Crises of Business (1986) and Dealers, Healers, Brutes & Saviors: Eight Winning Styles for Solving Giant Business Crises (2000.)
