Inspirational Quotes by Thomas Hooker (American Clergyman)

Thomas Hooker (c.1586–1647) was an English-born American nonconformist clergyman known as “the father of Connecticut.” A founding settler of Hartford, Connecticut, in 1636, he helped write the Fundamental Orders (1639,) which was Connecticut’s original constitution. He was an advocate of universal Christian suffrage early and the development of colonial New England.

Born in Markfield, Leicestershire, Hooker was a Puritan and became a Fellow of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, conducting a four-year teaching ministry at Chelmsford (1625–29.) In 1631, his nonconformist views forced him to flee to Holland. In 1633, he sailed for Massachusetts and became a pastor in Cambridge.

In 1636, Hooker moved with his congregation to Connecticut and founded the town of Hartford. He was the author of the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut (1638,) the first political constitution in North America, the forerunner of the U.S. Constitution, and the reason for Connecticut being called the ‘Constitution State.’
