Inspirational Quotes by Jerome (Greek Priest)

St. Jerome (c.342–420 CE,) originally Eusebius Hieronymus, was a Christian ascetic and biblical scholar. The most erudite and articulate of the four Latin Doctors of the Church, he is primarily recognized for his compilation of the Vulgate, the official Latin Bible of the Roman Catholic Church.

Born in Stridon, near Aquileia, Dalmatia, Jerome studied Greek and Latin rhetoric and philosophy at Rome, where he was also baptized. He lived for a time as a recluse, became a priest, served as secretary to Pope Damasus I, led a pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 385 CE, and established a monastery at Bethlehem in 389 CE. There he wrote the first Latin translation of the Bible from the Hebrew, which became known as the Vulgate.

St. Jerome’s many biblical, ascetical, monastic, and theological works profoundly influenced the early Middle Ages. He also wrote biblical commentaries, and vehement criticisms of Jovinian, Vigilantius, and the Pelagians, and even of Rufinus and St. Augustine of Hippo.

St. Jerome’s Feast day is 30 September.
