Inspirational Quotes by Corazon Aquino (Filipino Stateswoman)

Corazón Aquino (1933–2009,) fully Maria Corazón Sumulong Cojuangco Aquino, universally known as Cory, was a Filipino stateswoman. This “peaceful housewife” reestablished democratic rule after the 20-year dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos and served as the president of the Philippines 1986–92.

Born in Tarlac province, Aquino was the daughter of an affluent sugar baron. She studied in the U.S. and earned a degree in mathematics at Mount St Vincent College, New York. She married politician Benigno Simeon Aquino, Jr., and, during his confinement (1972–80) by President Ferdinand Marcos, kept him in touch with the outside world.

Aquino lived in exile with Benigno in the U.S. In 1983, he returned to the Philippines and was assassinated at Manila airport. This incident aroused opposition to the Marcos government. Aquino took up her husband’s cause. With extensive support, she claimed victory in the 1986 presidential elections and blamed Marcos for ballot-rigging. The ensuing non-violent ‘people’s power’ campaign brought the overthrow of Marcos and Aquino’s installation as the first woman president of the Philippines. She was named Time magazine’s Woman of the Year in 1986.

Internal opposition and persistent warfare between the communist insurgency and a military (its loyalties to Aquino were dubious) troubled Aquino’s presidency. In 1989, the sixth and most serious tried coup against her was resisted with U.S. interference. Her leadership was labeled indecisive, leaving many of her closest allies disenchanted by the end of her term. In 1992, she did not run for the presidency again. Instead, she sponsored the successful bid of General Fidel Ramos, her former defense secretary.

Aquino’s son Benigno Simeon Aquino III (b.1960) served as president of the Philippines 2010–16.

Faith is not simply a patience that passively suffers until the storm is past. Rather, it is a spirit that bears things—with resignations, yes, but above all, with blazing, serene hope.
