Lois Ann Lowry (b.1937,) née Hammersberg, is an American author who has written some 50 books, primarily directed toward young adults, since the 1970s. Lowry’s career spans several decades during which she has penned over 45 books, often addressing difficult subject matters, dystopias, and complex themes in works for young audiences.
Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, Lowry commenced her career as an author in the 1970s. Her writing encompasses a wide range of genres, from picture books to novels, and includes thought-provoking dystopian fiction. Her notable works include Number the Stars (1990,) depicting a young girl and her family helping Jewish neighbors escape Nazi-occupied Denmark in 1943. The Giver (1994) is a novel portraying a futuristic world without social ills and a 12-year-old boy who questions his seemingly perfect society.
Her later works comprise Gathering Blue (2000,) The Messenger (2004,) Like the Willow Tree (2011,) and The Windeby Puzzle (2023.) Her memoirs include Looking Back: A Book of Memories (1998,) drawing inspiration from family photographs. On the Horizon: Memories of World War II (2020) consists of recollections of living in Hawaii just before the Pearl Harbor attack (1941) and residing in Tokyo a few years after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
