Inspirational Quotes by Sarah Josepha Hale (American Poet)

Sarah Josepha Hale (1788–1879,) née Buell, was an American poet. She is wrote the nursery rhyme “Mary’s Lamb” (“Mary had a little lamb,”) and she was the first American female journal editor. She also advocated Thanksgiving as a national holiday.

Born in Newport, New Hampshire, Hale embarked on a literary career upon the death of her husband in 1822, to support their family of five young children. In 1828, she became the first female editor of the Ladies’ Magazine in Boston.

Hale publishing fifty books in all. Her notable works include the antislavery novel, Northwood (1827,) and a book of Poems for Our Children (1830,) which contained ‘Mary had a Little Lamb.’ She was the editor of Lydia Maria Child’s periodical Juvenile Miscellany (1834–36) and The Lady’s Book (1837–77; later called Godey’s Magazine and Lady’s Book.)

Hale advocated the education of women and wrote Woman’s Record: Or, Sketches of All Distinguished Women from ‘the Beginning’ till A.D. 1850 (36 vols., 1853, 1869, 1876,) a series of profiles of women notable for their contributions to society and literature.

Ruth Elbright Finley wrote The Lady of Godey’s (1931,) a biography of Hale.
