Inspirational Quotes by Gerry Adams (Northern Irish Politician)

Gerry Adams (b.1948,) fully Gerard Adams, was a Northern Irish politician and former president of Sinn Féin 1983 –2018. An important figure in the Northern Ireland peace process, his leadership made possible the 1994 cease-fire and the 1998 Good Friday agreement.

Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Adams became politically active at an early age, joining the Irish Nationalist Party, Sinn Féin, the political wing of the Irish Republican Army (IRA.)

During the ’70s, Adams was successively interned and then released because of his connections with the IRA. In 1978, he was selected vice-president of Sinn Féin and later president. In 1982, he was elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly and the following year to the U.K. parliament from Belfast West. He declined to take up his seat at Westminster as per party policy and, in the 1992 general election, lost it to Joe Hendron of the Social Democratic and Labour Party.

Adams was one of Sinn Féin’s chief architects to explore a peaceful settlement to sectarian violence in Northern Ireland. Due to government censorship, his voice was one of several outlawed in 1988 from being broadcast by the media. However, per electoral legislation, this ban was temporarily lifted during the 1992 election. It was raised again in 1995 as part of the peace process formed to end sectarian violence.

Adams represented Belfast West (1998–2010) in the Northern Ireland Assembly before winning a seat in Ireland’s Dáil (parliament,) representing Louth and East Meath (2011–20.) His works include Cage Eleven (1990) and the autobiography Before the Dawn (1996.)
