Inspirational Quotes by Jacques Prevert (French Poet)

Jacques Prévert (1900–77) was a French poet who wrote ballads of social hope and sentimental love. He also ranked among the leading screenwriters of the ’30s and ’40s, writing film scripts for The Visitors of the Evening (1942) and The Children of Paradise (1944.)

Born in Neuilly-sur-Seine, Prévert was a shop worker who turned to write after his military service, working for L’Argus de la Presse and the publicity company Damour. A member of the Surrealist Movement until he was ousted for irreverence, he first made his name as the author of witty, anarchic ‘song poems’ about street life in Paris, collected in Paroles (1946; Paroles: Selections, 1958) and Spectacle (1951.)

A writer and performer with the agitprop theater company Groupe Octobre, Prévert wrote the screenplay for their film L’affaire est dans le sac (1932, ‘It’s in the Bag,’) then progressed to a career as a screenwriter.

With French film director Marcel Carné, Prévert made the films Quai des brumes (1938, ‘Port of Mists’) and Le Jour se lève (1939, ‘Daybreak,’) as well as the masterpiece, Les Enfants du Paradis (1944; Children of Paradise 1968.) In later years he collaborated with his brother, the director Pierre Prévert (1906–88,) on short, animated films for children and worked extensively for French television (1961–68.)
