Inspirational Quotes by Jimmy Breslin (American Columnist)

Jimmy Breslin (1928–2017,) fully James Earle Breslin, was an American columnist and novelist. For decades, this winner of the 1986 Pulitzer for commentary was a fixture in New York City journalism, chronicling city life and championing ordinary citizens with a sharp wit and blunt, bold prose.

Born in Queens, New York, Breslin attended Long Island University but left without graduating. He started as a copyboy and then established himself as a sportswriter. His book about the 1962 New York Mets, Can’t Anybody Here Play This Game? (1963,) became a best seller and led to a job as a news columnist for the New York Herald Tribune.

With Gay Talese and Tom Wolfe, Breslin created “New Journalism,” which infused news reporting with a more literary approach. Later, as a syndicated columnist and contributor to numerous publications, Breslin wrote with passion and personal involvement on politics and social issues, often focusing on injustice and corruption.

Breslin wrote The Gang That Couldn’t Shoot Straight (1969; film 1971,) World Without End, Amen (1973,) He Got Hungry and Forgot His Manners (1988,) Damon Runyon: A Life (1991,) I Want to Thank My Brain for Remembering Me (1996; a memoir,) The Short Sweet Dream of Eduardo Gutiérrez (2002,) and The Good Rat (2008,)
