Inspirational Quotes by George Sewell (English Physician, Poet)

George Sewell (1687–1726) was an English physician and poet known as a controversialist and “hack writer.”

Born at Windsor, Sewell was educated at Eton College and graduated with a B.A. from Peterhouse Cambridge. He studied medicine under the Dutch botanist Hermann Boerhaave at the University of Leiden and got an M.D. at Edinburgh in 1725.

Sewell practiced London and Hampstead, but his practice ran into stiff competition. Under financial pressure, he became a booksellers’ hack, publishing numerous poems, translations, and political and other pamphlets.

Sewell’s publications include The Patriot: a Poem (1712,) An Epistle from Sempronia to Cethegus (1713; a satire,) The Proclamation of Cupid (1718,) two collections of poetry (1719, 1720,) and Tragedy of King Richard I, Essays and Poems, (1728.)
