Inspirational Quotes by Thomas Hodgkin (English Physician)

Thomas Hodgkin (1798–1866) was an English physician and pathologist. He was one of the most prominent pathologists of his time and a pioneer in preventive medicine. He first described the lymphatic disease that bears his name.

Born in Tottenham, Middlesex, Hodgkin was educated at Edinburgh and held various posts at Guy’s Hospital, London. He is now best known for the first account of the malignant but curable Hodgkin’s disease (1832,) a form of lymphoma and blood disease that causes painless enlargement of the lymph nodes, liver, and spleen.

Hodgkin’s work marked the beginning of times when a pathologist was actively involved in the clinical process. Hodgkin also provided one of the earliest descriptions of aortic insufficiency (1827,) wherein the aortic valve is damaged, forcing the cardiac muscle to work harder than usual.

Michael Rose wrote the biography Curator of the Dead: Thomas Hodgkin (1981.)
