Inspirational Quotes by David Douglas Duncan (American Photojournalist)

David Douglas Duncan (1916–2018) was an American photojournalist celebrated for his dramatic combat photographs of the Korean War. He was also known for his extensive photography of Pablo Picasso and his wife Jacqueline.

Born in Kansas City, Missouri, Duncan graduated from the University of Miami-Florida in 1938. He started working as a freelance photographer across North and South America and then served with the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. As a staff photographer for Life magazine since 1946, Duncan covered the Korean War and published This Is War! (1951,) narrating the day-to-day life of a typical soldier.

Duncan restarted freelance work in 1956. He had an ongoing interest in Pablo Picasso and gained rare access to photograph Picasso in relaxed and playful postures at his home and studio. Their collaboration produced the photographic essays The Private World of Pablo Picasso (1958,) Picasso’s Picassos (1961,) Goodbye Picasso (1974,) and The Silent Studio (1976.)

Duncan’s photographs of the 1968 Democratic and Republican presidential conventions produced Self-Portrait, U.S.A (1969,) and a sampling of his Vietnam War photos made up War Without Heroes (1971.) His exploratory works were published in Prismatics: Exploring a New World (1973) and Magic Worlds of Fantasy (1978.) His autobiography is Yankee Nomad: A Pictorial Odyssey (1966.)
