Inspirational Quotes by Mahlon Hoagland (American Biochemist)

Mahlon Bush Hoagland (1921–2009) was an American biochemist. He is celebrated for discovering transfer RNA (tRNA,) the translator of the genetic code, and the mechanisms behind amino acid activation and helped build genetics.

Born in Boston, Hoagland studied medicine at Harvard. He served as a visiting researcher at the universities of Copenhagen and Cambridge before returning to the bacteriology and immunology department of Harvard Medical School (1952–67.) He later became Professor of Biochemistry at Dartmouth Medical School (1967–85,) and from 1970–85 was scientific director of the Worcester Foundation for Experimental Biology.

He worked on the causes of cancer, liver regeneration, and growth control. His significant scientific contribution was his confirmation that an RNA transcript identifies the carrier for each amino acid in protein synthesis. Hoagland illustrated the role of amino acids in intracellular protein synthesis and the formation of ester links.

Hoagland’s biology textbook The Way Life Works (1998; with Bert Dodson) is a standard introductory work. Hoagland’s memoirs are Towards a Habit of Truth (1990.)
