Inspirational Quotes by John La Farge (American Artist, Writer)

John La Farge (1835–1910) was an American painter, muralist, stained-glass designer, and writer. One of the most multifaceted American artists of his time, he was a leading figure in the aesthetic movement, a vital contributor to the American Renaissance, and an instigator of Japonisme.

Born in New York City of French parentage, La Farge graduated from Mount St. Mary’s College in Emmitsburg, Maryland, in 1853 and studied law 1854–55. He went to Europe in 1856 to study and explore, remaining until the end of 1857. He painted pre-Impressionist landscapes and flowers 1860–76.

La Farge was among the earliest American painters to embrace the stylistic elements derived from progressive French landscape painting of the mid-19th century and Japanese prints, which he compiled. He was commissioned (1876) by the architect Henry Hobson Richardson to decorate Boston’s Trinity Church with murals.

La Farge subsequently focused on ecclesiastical art, designing opalescent stained-glass windows that contributed to a resurgence of the craft and painting murals such as The Ascension in the Church of the Ascension in New York (1857.) He wrote Considerations on Painting (1895,) An Artist’s Letters from Japan (1897,) and The Higher Life in Art (1908.)

American art historian Royal Cortissoz wrote John La Farge: A Memoir and Study (1911.)
