Mary Ashton Livermore (1820–1905,) née Rice, was an American journalist, abolitionist, and women’s rights advocate known for her Civil War service and her promotion of women’s social, political, and educational rights.
Born in Boston, Massachusetts, she attended the Female Seminary of Charlestown, graduating in 1838. She married Universalist minister Daniel Parker Livermore in 1845, and together they championed abolition and women’s rights.
During the Civil War, Livermore worked with the United States Sanitary Commission, organizing relief efforts and raising funds for soldiers. She played a central role in the 1863 Chicago Sanitary Fair, which raised nearly $100,000 for war relief. After the war, she became a leading advocate for women’s suffrage, temperance, and social reform.
A prolific writer and editor, she co-founded The Agitator, a pro-suffrage publication that later merged with The Woman’s Journal, where she served as editor. Her major works include Pen Pictures (1863,) My Story of the War (1887,) and The Story of My Life (1897,) which chronicled her reform work.
