Inspirational Quotes by Jean-Francois Regnard (French Dramatist)

Jean-Francois Regnard (1655–1709) was a French dramatist. He was one of the most successful of the successors of Molière, whose wit and style he openly imitated. He is equally famous now for the travel diary he kept on a voyage in 1681.

Born in Paris, Regnard inherited a considerable fortune at the age of 20 and traveled widely. In his autobiographical romance, La Provençale (‘A Woman from Provence,’) he tells of his and his mistress’s capture and sale as slaves by Algerian corsairs, their bondage in Constantinople, and their ransom.

Regnard found his vocation in the success of Le Divorce, performed by the Theatre-ltalien in Paris in 1688. Subsequent plays include Le Joueur (1696, ‘The Gamester,) Le Retour Imprévu (1700, ‘The Unexpected Return,’) and his masterpiece, Le Légataire universel (1708; The Sole Heir, 1912.)
