Inspirational Quotes by Tommy Prothro (American Football Coach)

Tommy Prothro (1920–95,) fully Thompson Prothro Jr., was an American football coach. He was the head coach at Oregon State University 1955–64 and the University of California-Los Angeles 1965–70, compiling a career college football record of 104–55–5 (.649.)

Born in Memphis, Tennessee, Prothro was the son of a major league baseball player and manager Doc Prothro. The New York Giants selected Prothro in the fifth round of the 1942 NFL Draft, but he rejected the opportunity and chose a coaching career.

Prothro served as an assistant coach at Western Kentucky University and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war, Prothro served as an assistant coach at Vanderbilt University 1946–48 and then at UCLA 1948–55.

Prothro’s sojourn to professional baseball included two years as head coach of the Los Angeles Rams (1971–73) and San Diego Chargers 1974–78. He tallied a career NFL mark of 35–51–2 (.409.)
