Inspirational Quotes by Henry M. Flagler (American Financier)

Henry Morrison Flagler (1830–1913) was an American financier who, with John D. Rockefeller, developed the Standard Oil Company. Flagler arranged the Florida East Coast Railway in 1886 and pioneered the development of Florida as a U.S. vacation center.

Born in Hopewell, New York, Flagler was a grain merchant in Bellevue, Ohio, where he met Rockefeller and sold grain through him. In 1867, they established an oil company that became Standard Oil in 1870. Flagler served as director of Standard Oil of New Jersey until 1911.

In 1883, Flagler visited Florida at the suggestion of a physician who believed the temperate climate would benefit his ailing wife. Three years later, He purchased the Jacksonville, St. Augustine & Halifax River Railroad in 1886 and extended its line to the Florida Keys, growing the company into the Florida East Coast Railway Company.

Flagler also invested in massive real estate, building palatial hotels and resorts. He also dredged Miami harbor and established steamship lines to Key West and Nassau. In honor of his contributions to its expansion, Flagler has been called the “Father of Florida” and is remembered as a founder of the cities of Miami and Palm Beach, Florida.
