Inspirational Quotes by Dale Spender (Australian Feminist)

Dale Spender (1943–2023) was an Australian feminist scholar, writer, teacher, and activist, best known for her pioneering work in feminist linguistics and literary history. She authored over thirty books, co-founded feminist publishing houses, and played a central role in recovering women’s intellectual contributions long overlooked by mainstream scholarship.

Born in Newcastle, New South Wales, Spender attended Burwood Girls High School in Sydney and later earned her MA in English literature from the University of Sydney, followed by a PhD at the University of London. Her early career included teaching English and history in Sydney schools before joining James Cook University in 1974. Moving to London in the mid-1970s, she became involved in the Women’s Liberation Movement and published her doctoral research as Man Made Language (1980,) a groundbreaking study arguing that patriarchal societies control language to marginalize women.

Spender’s influential works include Women of Ideas and What Men Have Done to Them (1982,) which traced suppressed female thinkers, and Mothers of the Novel: 100 Good Women Writers Before Jane Austen (1986,) which documented early women novelists erased from literary canons. She also edited feminist series such as Penguin’s Australian Women’s Library (1987) and co-founded Pandora Press in 1983, dedicated to publishing feminist nonfiction. Her activism extended to practical initiatives like the Second Chance Programme in Brisbane, supporting homeless women.
