Inspirational Quotes by David Brower (American Environmentalist)

David Ross Brower (1912–2000) was an American mountaineer and environmentalist. Considered the father of the modern conservation movement, he spent nearly 70 years trying to protect wilderness areas in the U.S.

Born in Berkeley, California, Brower often took his blind mother out on short hikes. He recalled later that helping her see sharpened his appreciation of the natural surroundings. He studied entomology at the University of California-Berkeley 1929–31 but left to become a mountaineer, and in 1933 joined the Sierra Club. He worked for Yosemite National Park and ascended its numerous mountain peaks. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army as an instructor and combat in the 10th Mountain Division. After the war, he returned to Yosemite National Park and worked as an editor for the University of California Press.

Brower was the founder of many environmental organizations, including the John Muir Institute for Environmental Studies, Friends of the Earth (1969,) Earth Island Institute (1982,) North Cascades Conservation Council, and Fate of the Earth Conferences. He served as the first Executive Director of the Sierra Club 1952–69 and was its board member 1941–53; 1983–88; and 1995–2000. Under his leadership, the Sierra Club saw its membership grow from 7,000 to 77,000.

Brower’s autobiography, For Earth’s Sake: The Life and Times of David Brower, was published in 1990.
