Inspirational Quotes by Joel Hawes (American Clergyman)

Joel Hawes (1789–1867) was an American clergyman. He is the author of Lectures to Young Men, which had a considerable circulation in the United States and Great Britain. His daughter Mary E. Van Lennep (1821–44,) was one of the earliest American missionaries to Turkey.

Born in Medway, Massachusetts, Hawes graduated from Brown University (1813) and studied theology at Andover Theological Seminary (1818.) He served 1818–62 at the First Congregational Church (today called the Center Church or First Church of Christ) in Hartford, Connecticut, where he became known as an able preacher and writer.

In addition to the popular Lectures to Young Men (1828,) Hawes published Tribute to the Memory of the Pilgrims (1830,) Memoir of Normand Smith (1839,) Character Everything to the Young (1843,) The Religion of the East (1845,) Looking-Glass for the Ladies, or the Formation and Excellence of Female Character (1845,) Washington and Jay (1850,) An Offering to Home Missionaries (1865,) and numerous occasional sermons.
