Inspirational Quotes by Anthony of Padua (Portuguese Friar)

Saint Anthony or Antony of Padua (1195–1231,) sometimes Anthony of Lisbon, born Fernando Martins de Bulhões, was a Portuguese Catholic priest and friar of the Franciscan Order. A patron of the poor, his devotion to the poor is celebrated by alms known as St Anthony’s bread.

Born into an affluent family in Lisbon, Portugal, Saint Anthony was first an Augustinian monk. In 1220, he joined the Franciscan order and quickly became one of its most active proponents. He is praised for his powerful preaching, expert knowledge of scripture, and undying love and devotion to the poor and the sick.

Anthony was canonized within a year after his death. Pius XII proclaimed him a Doctor of the Church in 1946. Saint Anthony is the patron saint of Portugal and Padua, the lower animals (legend has it that he sermonized to fishes when men refused to listen,) and lost property. His feast day is 13-June, and, in Christian artwork, he is usually portrayed with a book, a heart, a flame, a lily, or the child Jesus.

Saint Anthony’s original writings are sermons for Sundays and feast days, published at Padua in three volumes in 1979. Madeline Pecora Nugent produced Saint Anthony: Words of Fire Life of Ligh (1995.)
