Inspirational Quotes by Mort Sahl (American Comedian)

Mort Sahl (1927–2021,) fully Morton Lyon Sahl, was a Canadian-born American comedian, actor, and social satirist. Thanks to his biting political satire, he was credited with revolutionizing American comedy in the 1950s.

Born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, Sahl was drafted into the U.S. Air Force soon after World War II and stationed in Alaska, where he worked on the base newspaper. He then went to the University of Southern California to take a degree in city management.

Sahl made his professional stage début at the hungry i nightclub in San Francisco in 1953. His popularity snowballed, and by the end of the decade, he was a popular entertainer who traveled the country doing shows at established nightclubs, theaters, and college campuses. He appeared on various television shows, played many film roles, and performed a one-person show on Broadway.

Sahl’s popularity declined during the second half of the 1960s, but his shows and popularity staged a partial comeback by the 1970s. He pioneered a manner of social satire that prods fun at political topics and current events, employing improvisational monologues with only a newspaper as a prop. His Cold War material is credited for setting the bar for political comedy, and he continued to perform stand-up into his 80s, even after suffering a stroke.

American biographer James Curtis wrote Sahl, Last Man Standing (2017.)
