Inspirational Quotes by Babe Didrikson Zaharias (American Athlete)

Babe Didrikson Zaharias (1914–56,) fully Mildred Ella Didrikson Zaharias, was an American track and field athlete and golfer. One of the greatest all-around athletes of the 20th century, she achieved particular success in basketball and track and field, winning two gold medals at the 1932 Olympic games. She then turned to golf and won many major professional titles 1936–54.

Born in Port Arthur, Texas, Zaharias was in the All-American basketball team (1930–32,) then turned to athletics and won two gold medals in javelin and 80m sprint at the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles. She also broke the world record in the high jump but was disqualified for using the new Western Roll technique.

Excelling also in swimming, tennis, and rifle shooting, Zaharias turned to golf in 1934. After being briefly banned as an amateur for an unauthorized endorsement, she won the U.S. National Women’s Amateur Championship in 1946 and the British Ladies’ Amateur Championship in 1947. In 1948, she turned professional and went on to win the U.S. Women’s Open three times (1948, 1950, and 1954.)

Zaharias was famously competitive and multitalented. She was also an expert at cooking, sewing (at age 25, she won first prize at the 1931 Texas State Fair for her box-pleated dress,) and harmonica-playing. A year after a colostomy and two years before her death, she won the U.S. Women’s Open by 12 strokes.

Zaharias has been the subject of various books, including Don Van Natta Jr.’s biography Wonder Girl: The Magnificent Sporting Life of Babe Didrikson Zaharias (2011.)
