Inspirational Quotes by Shirin Ebadi (Iranian Human Rights Activist)

Shirin Ebadi (b.1947) is an Iranian political activist, lawyer, former judge, and human-rights activist. Ebadi won the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize for democracy and human rights efforts, especially women’s, children’s, and refugee rights. She was the first Muslim woman and the first Iranian to receive the prize.

Born in Hamadan in north-western Iran, Ebadi studied law at the University of Tehran (1969) and became one of Iran’s first women judges. She also earned a PhD in private law from the University of Tehran (1971) and headed the city court of Tehran 1975–79. After the 1979 Islamic Revolution, she, together with other female judges, was dismissed from the bench when conservative clerics asserted that it was against Islam’s laws to have women judges. She was demoted to a court clerk.

In 1992, after years of effort, she eventually got a license to practice law and started to do so. She also taught at the University of Tehran and became an advocate for civil rights. Ebadi championed women and dissidents and represented many people who had gone against the Iranian regime.

Ebadi helped establish the Defenders of Human Rights Center, but it was closed by the government in 2008. After the disputed 2009 presidential election, Ebadi went into exile in the United Kingdom and agitated for Iran’s reforms.

Ebadi’s books include The Rights of the Child (1994,) History and Documentation of Human Rights in Iran (2000,) and The Rights of Women (2002.) She also was the founder and head of the Association for Support of Children’s Rights in Iran. Ebadi’s memoirs are Iran Awakening: A Memoir of Revolution and Hope (2006) and Until We Are Free: My Fight for Human Rights in Iran (2016.)
