Cedric Hardwicke (1893–1964,) fully Sir Cedric Webster Hardwicke, was an English stage and film actor whose career spanned nearly 50 years. His theatre work included notable performances in productions of the plays of Shakespeare and George Bernard Shaw, and his film work had leading roles in several adapted literary classics.

Born in Lye, Worcestershire, Hardwicke served in World War I. He made his name in the Birmingham Repertory Company’s productions of George Bernard Shaw’s plays and The Barrells of Wimpole Street (1934) before establishing himself as a leading character actor in Hollywood.

Hardwicke played the leading roles in several films, including Dreyfus (1931,) Things to Come (1936,) The Winslow Boy (1948,) and others.

Hardwicke’s son Edward Hardwicke was the actor best known as the adventurous Dr. Watson in ITV Granada’s Sherlock Holmes series.
