Helen Cohn Schucman (1909–81,) born Helen Dora Cohn, was an American clinical psychologist and research psychologist. She was best known as the channel which received the material later incorporated into A Course in Miracles (ACIM,) the most successful channeled work of the late twentieth century.

Born in New York City, Schucman was a professing atheist influenced by a Roman Catholic governess and a Baptist house cleaner. She attended New York University, eventually earning a PhD in clinical psychology, focusing on mental retardation problems in children.

In 1958, Schucman started working at the Colombia-Presbyterian Medical Center and began collaborating with William N. Tetford, the hospital’s Psychology Department head.

On October 21, 1965, Schucman claimed to have heard an inner voice tell her, “This is a course in miracles. Please take notes.” She recorded what she was told in shorthand and, over the next seven years, read her notes to Tetford, who transcribed them. Eventually, some 1,200 pages were received. She then worked with Kenneth Wapnick to edit the materials and prepare the three-volume A Course in Miracles. Claiming to have been dictated by Jesus Christ via ‘waking dreams,’ the content offered a means to a more meaningful.

Schucman was a medical psychology professor at Columbia University in New York from 1958 until her retirement in 1976. After its publication in 1975, A Course in Miracles spread through the New Thought and New Age communities. Per her request, her role as its “writer” was not revealed until after her death.

Schucman’s writings include Evaluating the Educability of the Severely Mentally Retarded Child (1960) and the collection of poems, The Gifts of God (1982.) Kenneth Wapnick wrote the biography Absence from Felicity: The Story of Helen Schucman and Her Scribing of A Course in Miracles (1991.)
