Inspirational Quotes by Lloyd Alexander (American Writer)

Lloyd Chudley Alexander (1924 -2007) was an American author of more than forty books, primarily fantasy novels for children and young adults. His work was famous for its dreamy locales, complex characters, and symbolic depictions of the struggle against tyranny.

Born in Philadelphia, Alexander served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He attended the Sorbonne and translated several books from French into English, and edited an industrial magazine. He worked as a magazine cartoonist and copywriter for many years while launching his career as a writer and translator, which included translating Jean-Paul Sartre’s The Wall and Other Stories (1948) and Nausea (1949.)

Over his seven-decade career, Alexander wrote 48 books, and his work was translated into 20 languages. Alexander first found success with And Let the Credit Go (1955,) one of several adult books based on his own experiences. Alexander’s most famous work is The Chronicles of Prydain, a series of five high fantasy novels that included The Book of Three (1964,) The Black Cauldron (1965,) The Castle of Llyr (1966) and Taran Wanderer (1967,) and The High King (1968.) The animated Disney feature film The Black Cauldron (1985) was based on the Prydain novels.

Alexander later penned the Westmark trilogy, consisting of Westmark (1981,) The Kestrel (1982,) and The Beggar Queen (1984.)
