Inspirational Quotes by Charles H. Revson (American Businessman)

Charles Haskell Revson (1906–75) was an American entrepreneur. He turned a $300 investment into Revlon, the largest retail cosmetics and fragrance-manufacturing firm in the United States, with more than 3,000 products and annual sales at his death of $605 million. Revson served as Revlon’s president 1932–62 and chairman 1962–75.

Born in Somerville, Massachusetts, Revson worked as a textile buyer at a dress store and as a nail polish salesman for a cosmetics firm. When he was passed over for the position of national distributor in 1932, he quit the company. He joined his brother Joseph and a chemist to start Revlon. With an initial investment of $300, they developed the first pigment-based nail polishes in more shades than any other company offered at the time did.

Revson initially sold his products in beauty salons but soon expanded to drug and department stores. In 1939, Revson also became the first to introduce matching lipsticks and polishes. A firm believer in advertising, he developed exotic and evocative product names. He was known for his autocratic and direct management style. Revson built Revlon into a massive conglomerate with over 3,500 cosmetics products and the second largest cosmetics company in America.

Revson established the Charles H. Revson Foundation to support schools, hospitals, and service organizations serving the Jewish community.

Andrew Tobias wrote the biography Fire and Ice: The Story of Charles Revson, the Man Who Built the Revlon Empire (1976.)
